In May, I booked day on the up-coming independent film, FROM THE HEAD, written, directed by and starring the powerful George Griffith. I had a blast with P.J. Marino and George on set, in my old hood in Los Feliz/ Silverlake. (Just a stone’s throw from Sunset Junction, and the home of LA coffee mecca Intelligentsia Coffee. Mmmm….)

The film “is loosely based on Griffith’s experiences as a bathroom attendant in a New York City strip club in the mid-’90s…and his interaction with the 60-plus idiosyncratic characters who enter the bathroom on one afternoon.”

Here’s a pic from the end of the day, and an article that just came out in Variety about the film.

The plan at the time of shooting was to submit the film to festivals next year. Personally I think with the script being so strong and the unconventional way in which it was shot, it would be shocking if George didn’t get a whole slew of screenings out of this one… here’s hoping!

Restless Souls and Haunted Spirits
by Chiori Miyagawa
directed by Sarah Cameron Sunde
dramaturg: Emily Morse

Performed by: Godfrey Simmons, David L. Townsend, Maria Oliveras, Monique Vukovic, April Matthis and Jake Manabat with Elizabeth Brown – Shakuhachi (Japanese Bamboo Flute) player

In Restless Souls and Haunted Spirits, a war is fought on a shore, a crazy woman looks for her kidnapped son at a bus station, a father and son have a fall out which results in the son becoming blind and homeless, parents conspire to break up their daughter’s relationship by drowning her lover, a poor old man falls in love with a wealthy young girl and commits suicide; and life goes on, people bumping into one another before and after death and somewhere in between. It is a comic-tragedy based on ancient human attachments, set in the present time somewhere like the USA, narrated by a woman with tragic hair.

From the PCS website:

Can a lightweight, has-been talk show host lead the most infamous political figure of his time to publicly acknowledge his guilt? That is the central question raised in Peter Morgan’s delicious drama about a series of televised interviews that former president Richard Nixon granted British journalist David Frost in 1977. The New York Times described the play as “proceed[ing] with the momentum of a ticking-bomb thriller and the zing of a boulevard comedy…structured as a prize fight between two starkly ambitious men in professional crisis, FROST/NIXON makes it clear that the competitor who controls the camera reaps the spoils.”

Happy to say that I was recently in a reading of Anna Ziegler’s new play (in development) The Minotaur, with an all-star cast and Rebecca Taichman directing. Anna’s work is so fresh and intelligent that I can’t wait to see how this play continues to grow.

Between, the film I shot with Scott Simmons and Freemaniac Productions, has come together and will be making the rounds at the festivals this year. There are few short clips in my reel that I am currently putting together. When that’s done I’ll post it here.

October is Theater-Month in New York apparently. So many good shows, so little time. Recently caught a preview performance of Danny Hoch’s TAKING OVER (directed by Tony Taccone), which will be at the Public Theater this fall. Danny is amazing, and this show was no exception. He tore into the complicated issues of gentrification, community, what it means to have your home taken from you and what we all want “home” to look like. A hot-button issue in these parts, and one that has brought him back to the NY-stage after 10 years away! Check it out.

Lots of great shows coming this winter as well, and I’m working hard to get in some of them. Keep you posted.
